“David Cole did a rough model of the interior of the plane to help us figure out the angles and placement of the characters. We knew it was going to be a logistical nightmare to make sure everything worked. (David’s Model) became very handy for board artists.”

While I always work hard at the task for which I am hired, I strive to find ways to utilize additional skills to best serve the Art Director and Production.
During my job as Lead TD at DUCK Studios on The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol for Sony Pictures Animation I offered to model sets to help lock locations into the designs of Peyo’s shape language.
This process allowed the Director, Troy Quane, and Art Director, Andy Gaskill to adjust layouts easily before locking down the final layout for paint. It also helped to tie the 2D animation back to the 3D movie.
Later on, I used this process for McDonald’s Ferris’ Funky Farm commercials, both for the Happy Meal (which needed to remain constantly on model no matter the angle) as well as props and vehicles that were animated throughout the spots.
